The Glass Eye Game Book Cover and logo design for Cryolite Press

Jonny Pearce approached Hello Lovely Design and Co for a book cover design for his new novel which is published on IngramSpark and Amazon’s KDP. He also asked me to create a logo for his new imprint, the Cryolite Press which you can read about on this case study.

I started with the cover first and then, as I got chatting to Jonny about his work and the audience, developed the logo design. I also supported him with a check on his interior pages which he was completed himself and provided feedback to improve the reader experience.

Scamps or samples

This was the first stage, taking ideas from the brief to create up to 4 samples and then developing them into 3 more, and gradually refining until final selection.

The work relationship with Berenice was the highlight of the project. I found we were able to have open, constructive, transparent and honest working relationship, whree everything involved in the cover/logo design process was handled clearly, creatively and professional. Berenice was clear upfront about what would be involved in the process, how things would work and the relevant timescales.

Berenice always provided useful advice and tips about the options and advantages/disadvantages around different cover designs, which was invaluable when it came to whittling down to preferred designs and then a final one.

In addition to creating the cover/logo, Berencie also helped me with a number of other related issues or problems about self-publishing (beyond those matters affected only cover design), drawing upon her extensive industry experience.

What Hello Lovely did

My first contact with Jonny was via a free discovery call in which he shared his publishing story and detailed what help was required. From there, I sent him an agreement and suggested dates so that he knew the terms, and we set up a payment plan.

I also worked on dates with Jonny so that he had plenty of time to focus on the inside pages which he had chosen to create himself.

I helped Jonny with the important aspects of paper weights, page counts, and print pricing, and I provided feedback on the internal page proofs, as well as helping with a colour issue.

The cover images are sourced from legal photo libraries under UK Copyright Law so they’re compliant with marketing and publishing requirements. The cover could easily have been insensitive, so care was taken around the content so it wasn’t unappealing, but of course, there’s a clear graphical reference to a glass eye.

Audience sensitivity is important and it’s one of the topics on Hello Lovely Learning's Self Publishing Foundations, a self-study course I have created for authors.

Alongside this I created a simple but eye-catching logo for the Cryolite Press featuring an appropriate hand-drawn piece of cryolite. This appears in the book and on the cover and supports the publication post-publication, lending an air of credibility.

The result

The finished cover looks really strong and Jonny was able to load the covers to IngramSpark and KDP with ease. The book can be bought via Jonny’s website, where extracts are available.
